Do you really LOVE Apple Pie? Who doesn't... it's all American. However, it used to be All English as it was made in England over 600 years ago. Known as Dumplings, it was a ball of dough filled with fruit. Since sugar was scares and expensive, sweet fruits were added such as figs. The English settlers brought apple pie making to America and now it's as American as ever.

Delicious Apple Pie

Ingredients:

6 Granny Smith apples, cored, peeled and sliced
4 cups water
juice of 1 lemon
1/2 C butter
1/2 C sugar
1/2 C brown sugar
3 T flour
1 T organic raw apple cider vinegar
1 t cinnamon
1/2 t salt
Double Pie Crust (pre-bought)
1 egg
2 T cream
finishing sugar

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Core, peel and slice 6 Granny Smith apples. In a bowl, add the water and juice of a lemon and soak your apple slices as you slice them to prevent from turning brown.

In a saute pan, melt butter then combine both sugars, flour, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, and salt. Cook over low heat for about 4 minutes until the butter melts and everything is incorporated.

Drain the water from the apple slices then add the butter/sugar mixture... toss to coat.

Put the bottom pie dough into a deep dish pie pan (I use a great Royal Worcester oven to tableware pie dish I picked up in England years ago). Pack all the apples into the dough and top with any remaining butter/sugar mixture... use it all. Top with 2nd piece of dough (I did a lattice top method). Mix egg and cream until incorporated and brush top of pie until coated and glistening. Finish with sugar and place on baking sheet to catch run-over!

Bake for 50 - 55 minutes or until apples are tender and the top is browned and delicious.

We always serve with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream.

Wanted to share some of the pictures I've been taking in our backyard. We've been spending a lot of time working in the flower beds, removing some old shrubbery and getting ready to put in a small rock patio at the back of the pool overlooking the other portion of our yard.

My Meyer Lemon Tree is extremely happy this spring and has over 30 cough drop sized lemons so far. Additionally our geraniums are just as happy sitting around the pool. Our morning temperatures have been cool still, which we love, as it gives us quality time to work without getting too hot.

Commercial shoot for Mandola's Italian Market

My husband Trey and I just finished a commercial shoot for Mandola's Italian Market in Bee Caves. It was a wonderful experience meeting Damian Mandola, the entire crew and Corder market staff. The place was super busy, and we were table extra's, sitting behind Damian as he showcased some of the incredible menu items. We were directed to smile and eat... toasting and chatting. The food was of course awesome and Damian was his energetic and animated self! We truly love to go to the Market and even head out to Trattoria Lisina and his winery in Driftwood for special celebrations. My recommendation is the Zinfandel... it's incredible!

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, TED Award and how YOU can help!!!

Saw Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution and I'm so excited to have him on loan from the UK, his wife and his children.   His vision is amazing and frankly, it's about time.

As a Mom - I see what my kids eat at school and have never been happy with the menu they offer.   Additionally, I hate the fact that our children are limited on their lunch time frame, having only 20 minutes from start to finish!   Typically they have a mere 10 minutes to woof down their meal...   most things are processed, frozen, canned and microwaved or re-heated.

The school my child attends has a wider variety of choices, and I'm thankful for that, however I try to instill healthy choices by packing her lunch at least 3 times a week.   She will eat cherry tomatoes, pickles, loves the healthier yogurt and organic non sweetened applesauce.   I pack 2 fruits and will happily peel a clementine at 6:00 a.m. so she has more time to eat it.   I do allow her to pick goldfish, pretzels or something like that because she is eating a well rounded variety of things.

After watching Jamie's TED Video, which I will post, I want to have a sit down with her and get her to identify fruits and vegetables.   I am lucky though, she already can cook and she is 7 years old.   She can make a mean guacamole, has her own knife (it's a lettuce knife) and will attend local cooking classes in a summer camp fashion.   She eats broccoli, edamame, avocado and will try everything I give her, even if it's just a tiny bite.   I rarely buy her fast food... honestly, we went twice in one year (1 time to Chuck E Cheese for her Birthday and 1 time to McDonald's during Spring Break).

I urge you to watch Jamie's TED video all the way through... Steiner Ranch Elementary has a garden plot, but it's primarily a Butterfly garden.   I'm going to email the Vice Principal to see what we can do to expand it and utilize what is grown in the kitchen.   What can you do?

Simple Side: Herb Roasted New Potatoes

Herb Roasted New Potatoes, a simple yet delicious side that I have forgotten about. With the emergence of spring, my herb garden is showing signs of life though covered with Live Oak leaves. I was able to cut a handful of thyme and rosemary... an excellent combination!

Herb Roasted New Potatoes

Ingredients:

16 - 18 red new potatoes, scrubbed and quartered
2 T olive oil
your choice fresh herbs, chopped finely
1 clove garlic, minced
sea salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Scrub and quarter your new potatoes and place in a roasting pan. Drizzle with olive oil. Finely chop your herbs and garlic and add to the potatoes. Salt and pepper to taste and toss to evenly coat potatoes. Place in oven and roast 35-45 minutes until potatoes are tender but have that delicious roasted crush.

Apricot and Jalapeno Glazed Cornish Game Hens

With spring finally here, I knew I wanted to use fruit when roasting the Cornish Game Hens. I also thought that fire roasted jalapenos and garlic would add more depth to the flavors... so here it is!

Apricot and Jalapeno Glazed Cornish Game Hens

Ingredients:

4 Cornish Game Hens, rinsed and patted dry
6 jalapenos, fire roasted and steamed, peeled and seeded
1 C. apricot nectar
1 C. apricot preserves
2 heads of garlic, smashed
2 T. olive oil
salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Rinse and pat dry the Cornish Game Hens, set aside. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.   Add 1 T. olive oil to roasting pan.

I fire roast my own jalapeno's over one of my gas burners of my cook top. Char them black and place them in a paper sack to steam.   Once cooled, the skin comes right off. Slice and remove seeds and put them in the apricot nectar for 10 minutes.   Pour the nectar and jalapeno's into a blender and process until pureed.

Rub each Cornish Game Hen with the remaining 1 T olive oil.   Then brush the apricot/jalapeno puree inside and out of each bird.   Add 2 - 3 T of puree to pan and set aside remainder.   Stuff each bird cavity with 3 -4 smashed cloves of garlic.    Brush each bird with apricot preserves, salt and pepper to taste.   Add remaining smashed cloves of garlic to pan.

Roast, uncovered, for an hour and baste again with both apricot/jalapeno puree followed by apricot preserves.   The birds should have a yummy caramel color.   Remove from the oven and transfer the birds to a serving plate to rest.   For the sauce, remove garlic from pan, add remaining apricot/jalapeno puree and simmer until reduced and thick.

To plate - I started with a bed of fresh baby spinach, topped with a whole Cornish Game Hen and a side of mixed grain rice.   Add the sauce and you have an incredibly tasty meal!

There is a lost art of handwriting notes and thank you's these days. With instant gratification such as email and texting, I can understand why. However, don't forget that a handwritten note is like sending a great big hug!

BEWARE of Craigslist Leasing Scams!

I just brought a leasing scam into the light, protecting my client from a potential loss of money.   I am so appalled that I have to share it in hopes of protecting other people who may not be fully informed within the State of Texas.

My client found an ad on Craig's List for a downtown Austin condo at an incredibly unbelievable price (lesson #1, to live downtown Austin costs money).   The address was not disclosed, so she sent the standard anonymous email asking for more info, and cc'ed me! (lesson #2, if the address is NOT disclosed, this is starting to smell funny.).   She got a response stating that in order to see the unit (address STILL NOT disclosed) that she needed to get a credit/rental report from a provided site. I went to that url and was re-directed twice to Key Credit Report which requires a person to JOIN.   After reading all their fine print, it was disclosed that to join requires a fee that has a 3 day refundable window only.   It took me 5 minutes of reading to get to that line. (lesson #3, in Texas, you pay an application fee only after choosing a place, not before).   For clarification, please go to Texas Apartment Associations FAQ at http://www.taa.org/assets/PDF/renter/aptlivemay2008.pdf

An application fee, after finding a place to lease, will cover the costs of running a credit check, rental history and is non refundable. But it is important to note that you do not pay the fee unless you have seen the unit personally and have completed the actual application, making sure it's through a verified organization such as the Texas Apartment Association, Texas Association of Realtors or some other professional entity.

Finally, I went to TCAD (Travis County Appraisal District) and looked up the last name of the woman emailing my client.   I found one property that could be the unit advertised, but after confirmation with the owner, know that it is not the unit. I sent out a lengthy email, copied some of the best in the industry for their opinion. I think I need to check to see if the Craig's List Ad has been removed.

Above all, be informed when leasing!   You can use a REALTOR, Property Management Company or Apartment Locators, making sure they have a good reputation.   Do your research, find representation and if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is!

New recipe - Slow Cooker Beer and Beef Stew

Try this yummy recipe when time is not your own... all it takes is a little prep time the night before. Start it up before you head out the door in the morning and when you return in the evening, dinner is ready!

Slow Cooker Beer & Beef Stew

Ingredients:

2 lbs. bottom round, trimmed of fat and cut into 1 inch cubes * 3 T. flour * 1 med. red onion, cut into med. wedges * 4 carrots, cut into 1/2 inch slices * 3 potatoes, peeled and cubes * 3 celery stalks, cut into 1/2 inch slices * 2 cloves garlic, minced * 1 T rosemary, minced & crushed * 2, 15 oz cans diced tomatoes, drained * 2 bottles brown ale beer * 2 T. granulated beef bouillon * 1 bay leaf * 1 t. caraway seeds * salt and pepper to taste * Ciabatta bread, sliced and toasted

Directions:

Making sure your beef is patted dry, dust all pieces with flour. Place beef, onion, carrots, potatoes, celery, garlic and rosemary into your slow cooker. Stir in tomatoes and beer. Add beef bouillon, bay and caraway seeds. Cover slow cooker and cook 8 hours on low or 4 hours on high, without removing the lid - no peeking!!!

Check for tenderness of meat at the end of the cooking time, salt and pepper to taste.

Slice and toast the Ciabatta bread, serve the stew in bowls and enjoy!

My Corn Pudding Recipe

Made this for a Superbowl Party that we're going to this afternoon. So many people from Facebook asked for the recipe so here it is! Enjoy!

Corn Pudding Recipe:

3T butter
3T Panko bread crumbs
6 strips jalapeno bacon (chopped)
2 cans Nibblets corn (NOT creamed type)
1 t cayenne
1 med. sweet onion (chopped)
2 shallots (minced)
2 cloves garlic (minced)
2 C heavy cream
1 C whole milk
6 eggs
1 T pepper
1/4 t nutmeg
1 C. Gruyere (grated)
1/2 C Jiffy Corn Bread mix
salt to taste.

Heat oven to 350*

Butter bottom and sides of a casserole dish and sprinkle with bread crumbs, set aside.

In saute pan melt remaining butter and add bacon. Cook for a few minutes, until bacon is cooked, then add onion, shallots, garlic and corn. Stir, then add cayenne and salt to taste. Cook for 5 minutes on medium heat. Remove from heat and cool.

In large bowl combine cream, milk and eggs and whisk together. Add fresh grated nutmeg, pepper and cheese. Stir in cooled corn and onion mixture and then add the corn bread mix. Stir well and pour into breaded casserole dish and bake for about an hour or until golden.

This is so delicious and makes a great side to any main meal!

Note that the corner piece is missing... my husband just couldn't resist tasting it!!!

"I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once."

This had me laughing from the get-go! I'm always thinking out loud that I need another 4 -5 hours per day to get it all done, but honestly, it's because I don't know the word 'no' and volunteer to do way too much! From my two jobs (yes I have two), volunteering, husband and family, cooking dinner and everything else in between it seems like I get several days attacking me at once. Thank goodness for the Outlook calendar which sends me reminders every day or I'd never keep track of my schedule.

I'm still giggling about that quote... and though I'm publicizing my chaotic way of life, I do it with a smile on my face and a warmth in my heart because it is who I am and I'm happy with that!

The imagination of a 6 year old...

I will begin with this caveat, it is my fault!

I grew up in England and started my education in British schools so naturally, I acquire a British accent (which I'm still very good at!) Later in life, we moved back and I easily picked up the intonation while keeping my American accent. (If you've heard Madonna or Gwyneth Paltrow speak recently, you can hear it).

Back to Texas and my enunciation is a mess! I'm a complete combination of twang, drawl, brogue and something else thrown in for good measure.

Fast forward to 2009/2010... This past summer my 6 year old daughter Emma attended several acting summer camps. To be silly, I started speaking to her in my British accent and she mimicked me in a beautiful fashion. Now she begs me to make tea for her every morning. "Mummy, can I have a cup of tea?" Tea = Earl Gray loose leaf tea seeping in a tea pot, add sugar and milk! I've even found Digestive Biscuits at the Four Points HEB so when she gets home from school, it's Tea Time too!

That Cheeky Monkey is a little buggar! :)

Being that we are still in the winter months, comfort food always comes to my mind. I have created a yummy Apple and Cranberry Dumpling recipe that will compliment any meal. Enjoy!

STACEY RIDER’S APPLE and CRANBERRY DUMPLINGS

Ingredients:

Dough
2 c. all-purpose flour
2 t. baking powder
1 t. salt
2/3 c. butter (still cold)
1/2 c. milk

Apples
4 large apples
6 T. white sugar
3 T. ground cinnamon
2 t. ground nutmeg
1/2 c. dried cranberries (optional)

Syrup
1 1/2 c. white sugar
1 1/2 c. water
1/4 t. ground cinnamon
1/8 t. ground nutmeg

Preheat oven to 375 F. Peel apples and, using a kitchen gadget or sharp knife, remove all of the cores. Slice off just a small amount at the top and bottom of each apple to flatten them out so they’ll wrap in the dough easier. Rinse off the apples in cold water and dab dry with a paper towel. Set aside.

In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter, using your hands to squish everything together, until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Pour in milk all at once and stir to form a dough. Add a little more flour if needed to make the dough less sticky. Do not overwork the dough as you want it to remain light and tender. Split the dough ball in half and on a floured surface, roll out one half to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into two 6″ squares.

Place a whole apple in the center of a dough square. Mix together the sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg listed under “Apples” above. Generously dust each apple with this mixture and fill the core with cranberries and a little more sugar mixture. Moisten the edges of the pastry square with a finger dipped in cool water and bring the corners together at the top of the apple. Press edges together to seal and pinch together any tears in the dough around the apple.

Repeat the rolling out of the second half of the dough and creating the other two dumplings. Place all four dumplings in a baking dish, one inch apart, and decorate with dough cut-outs of leaves or any other creative flare you can think to use.

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the ingredients listed under “Syrup” above. Bring to a boil then remove from heat to cool slightly. Pour the syrup over the dumplings and sprinkle with additional sugar (this forms a delectable golden crust once baked). Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes, until apples are tender (use a fork poked into them to test) and dough is nicely browned.

Best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Can be stored in fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 200 F for 15 minutes.

Venison Chili

Just finished making a batch of Venison Chili... it was good but could be better. My husband Trey and I are going to enter into the Steiner Ranch Chili Cook off on February 20th. We love to cook together and decided to start now to perfect our recipe. Today's attempt was to see if we like the venison we had or not.

Of course I made too much, as is always the case, so I took that as an opportunity to get my neighbors into the excitement and asked them to rate it for us. Said more was to come... and to very honest.

Obviously we are having Chili for dinner unless we go to the Steiner Ranch Steakhouse...

Busy and stressed...

I'm busy and stressed, I'll admit it freely... but I got a bit of a reprieve tonight and can sit at my desk, looking at the computer and deeply sigh a "whew - I'm feeling better now breath."

Went to dinner with my husband, parents and older daughters, then over to TexArts to see "I'll Be Seeing You" co-starring my ex sister-in-law, Wendy Zavaleta. The show was fantastic, bringing visions of the early 1940ies to mind. How those families, my family, had to struggle during the holiday's knowing their Dad was serving overseas during WWII was amazing. I admit, I cried.

I didn't have to cook tonight and got to witness some amazing dancing and singing - I'm one happy camper. Caitlin was serenaded and the singer kissed her hand. What a great night.

But, as I get ready to tuck myself into my comfy bed, I can't help but think of the soldiers eating their MRE's tonight and getting ready to hit they hay in their tents. Sleeping in boots, a uniform with your gun near by is not my idea of the Holiday Spirit.

So as I lay my head to rest, I pray for all the Soldiers out there tonight.... and wish them a Merry Christmas. May God comfort them and keep them tightly encased in the palm of His hand. God bless the USA.

Christmas Weather

After surviving one of the hottest summers in Austin on record, my family celebrated when the temperatures started to drop. Is was nothing huge, but 5 degrees here and a few degrees more found us in October. El Nino kicked in and we watched excitedly as Lake Travis levels increased. All the rain in October and November treated us to overcast skies and cooler days.

Then December arrived...

We have had one "normal" day so far this month, which was this past Sunday, where it reached 70 degrees. Today, it's 10:48 a.m. and is only 38 outside! We have seen fog almost every day, everything is damp, cloudy, chilly and just plain WONDERFUL!

For the Texan, this weather is very unusual...

There have been many Christmas Days where we wore short sleeved shirts because it was just too warm. To me, it takes away some of the magic of Christmas. I want to feel the chill, see my breathe in the cold air, sit by the fire and drink hot apple cider. This year, I am getting my wish!

Of course, no matter what the weather on Christmas Day, let us not forget why we celebrate.

Why is it that when an actor plays a warm and wonderful role in a movie it makes him more attractive? Seriously... My daughters and I just finished watching Julie and Julia and my oldest daughter Lindsey and I both agree, Stanley Tucci is incredibly handsome in this movie! Okay, not just in this movie as I find him attractive in all his roles and in his real life, but really... he was endearing, loving, and the type of man you want to be married to!!! When he stood up and gave the Valentine's Day toast to Meryl Streep (as Julia Child) wow... that brought tears to my eyes. I can envision that he is like that in real life too... though who knows.

Family + Food + Holidays...

My middle daughter Caitlin is home from college... today was a super special day! With Christmas music in the background, we continued on with our decorations, ordered incredible salads from Panera and then watch Julie & Julia. Wow, love it! During the movie, we ran into the kitchen and I made homemade chocolate sauce for our strawberries and banana's and then made ginger bread cookies in the shape of holly leaves. We'll decorate them tomorrow with royal icing for my Home Holiday Shopping Extravaganza at my home this Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m.

I love Christmas, I love having all our children home and I LOVE cooking/baking for our family and friends.

Patience

During this busy time of the year, it seems as if we all misplace our patience and are less than amicable to those around us on the road, in the grocery store, in the line at the post office. It's not as if people try to be short during Christmas, but with so much to do with limited time, our patience can wear thin.

The test, and what we should all do in the spirit of the season, is to be patient with those who lose their cool. Offer them a smile or a helping hand. In severe cases, let them step ahead of you in that long line. You'll be astonished at their amazement and it's wonderful to watch the appreciation appear on their face.

Above all - don't lose sight of the meaning of Christmas... peace on earth and good will towards men.

Easy Thanksgiving Cranberry Sauce

This is my tasty and simple recipe for Cranberry Sauce that will compliment your Turkey and all the trimmings for Thanksgiving. My motto is "say NO to the can!"

Ingredients:

1 bag cranberries
1/2 C. sugar
1/2 C. brown sugar
1/2 C. orange juice
1/2 C. water
1/4 t. cinnamon
zest of one orange
fresh juice of 1/2 orange

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, dissolve the sugars in the juice and water. Add the cinnamon and then the cranberries. Add the zest and fresh juice and stir.

Cook the cranberry mixture until they start to pop, about 10 - 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat, transfer to a serving bowl and let it cool. The Cranberry Sauce will thicken on its own as it cools.

This is not just for Thanksgiving either. A spoonful of this great Cranberry Sauce over a warm wedge of Brie with crackers makes a great snack or appetizer!

Did I mention that someone gave me the finger as I was driving on 2222? I was floored! Let me back-track and offer the beginning scenario...

I turned onto 2222 at City Park Road and drove in the inside lane, stopping at the red light at Jester. Older model Green Jag next to me. As we drove up Tumble Weed hill, I knew I would over take him. Then I noticed the Honda Accord behind me, on my bumper. He weaved into the right lane and then between the Jag and myself, where there was barely enough room. Once in the left lane and in front of me, he slammed on his breaks and flipped me off. REALLY??? Wow - I braked to avoid hitting him and once I regained my composure, gave him a thumbs up and applauded his efforts. I also burned his license plate into my mind.

Guess what - it's easy to figure out who is who with a license plate number. Not only do I know who he is, where he lives, and who he has his auto loan with - I also know his plates expired in June and boy o boy, LBJ would be really disappointed to know his Director was driving like a mad man!

I even have his email address though I haven't sent him a "hello" note yet.

I guess I'm the one acting like an adult here now.

There are several up and coming events in Steiner Ranch that you really want to add to your calendar!

Tonight is "Camping on the Ranch". Starting at 6:00 at the Towne Square Community Fields, families can pitch their tents for a night of community camping. Texas Rib King will be there serving dinner for $8.00 a plate or you can bring your own picnic. Sunday morning Cups and Cones will be selling breakfast tacos, coffee and hot chocolate and the Social Committee will be giving away doughnuts!

Mark your calendar on December 4th for the Annual Holiday Wine Social. Tickets are $15 each and are currently on sale on line at http://holidaywinesocial2009.eventbrite.com/. Limited to 80 people, this celebration will feature music from Feel Good Music (Mike Avila) in addition to wine and hors d'oeuvres. Fall Decorating Tip

This time of the year will find most of us planning for our Thanksgiving Celebration. I start with the guest list, then the menu, followed by my grocery list. I follow them to a tee, checking off as I go along. I try to buy what I can ahead of time, and make as much as I can from scratch. This year, we will have 20 family and friends in our home! Needless to say, the last thing on my “list” is decorating however, it’s equally important to create that feeling of Thanksgiving not only through the food I will serve, but also through the decor. I want my guests to feel the spirit of the celebration from the moment they walk through the door of our home.

One of the easiest ways to decorate is with fruit! Imagine a cornucopia of fruit in a glass bowl! I love arranging fruits that match the colors of the Holiday - lemons, apples, oranges, and even pomegranates! There are red and bosc pears, grapes, kumquats, pineapple and even cranberries.

The beauty of this decorating tip is that they are edible and can be enjoyed by you and your guests once the Thanksgiving meal has fully digested but the football games carry on!

Baby Einstein DVD's don't create Brilliant Children?

The New York Times is reporting that Disney is offering refunds on its Baby Einstein DVD's because, according to the Campaign For A Commercial-Free Childhood, they did not increase infant intelligence.

This insults MY intelligence and I feel sorry for Disney...

Never did I anticipate greater intelligence from my daughter as I purchased those DVD's. It was never a hope or dream that she would become some child savant because she was watching puppets and listening to Mozart. However, it was also not my desire for a free 30 minute babysitting session either.

Personally, the DVD's offered 30 minutes of down time. My daughter would cuddle down on the sofa, and be entertained by soothing music, wonderful colors, happy puppet characters and smiling children. After a busy day of getting up early, school, recess, and after school friends, what is wrong with that?

It angers me when organizations such as the Campaign For a Commercial-Free Childhood try to force its opinions and ideals on parents. To make their point, they went after Disney and threatened a Class Action Law Suit. To avoid that situation, Disney will now refund some of your money... if you return 4 DVD's to them that were purchased since 2004, they will refund you $15.99 each, and you don't need a receipt. However, I hope that all parents who purchased these DVD's DO NOT return them. My daughter is 6, and although the Baby Einstein series has moved to a shelf in her closet, she will still ask to watch them. One of our favorites is Baby Santa's Music Box and we watch it every year when we put up our Christmas Tree.

You don' t know me, you don't know what my home is like in the afternoons, you don't know when my child watched her first DVD and why I make the parental decisions I do. By the way, my daughters first DVD was Disney's Twice Upon a Christmas and we still watch it to this day... yeah Disney!

AUSTIN (KXAN) - A homebuilding industry online magazine has ranked Austin the nation's healthiest housing market. Builder Online cites low unemployment and high demand as reasons why the Austin market is making a comeback.

Home prices in Austin were still going up last year, unlike most of the country, but they have finally started to fall. The latest numbers show home prices down 4.6% in 2009.

"Clearly we're not as good as we'd like, obviously we'd like for things to be better but still it gives you some feeling of assurance that things aren't as bad as some people are having," said Harry Savio with the Greater Austin Homebuilders Association.

Builder Online notes that Austin's population grew by more than 4% during the first half of this year which created demand and will help to firm up home prices.

"The fundamentals are there for housing to continue to grow," said Savio. "We don't have a lot of inventory, we don't have a lot of excess houses on the ground."

Savio said builders are also seeing a boom in large part due to the federal government's $9,000 tax credit for first time homebuyers.

"A lot of first time homebuyers are going out and looking at houses and realizing, if I'm going to buy a house this is probably a good time to do it," said Savio.

The credit expires November 30th, but housing industry experts in Austin don't expect a cash-for-clunkers style decline in home sales.

"You worry about that but the good news in the article is that there are some fundamental things about the economy- the Austin economy that is sound," said Savio.

Two other Texas cities ranked in the top ten. San Antonio finished just behind Austin at number two. And the Houston-Sugar Land area ranked number four.

From my neighbor and friend, Monique Brannon, who has the loveliest yard in Steiner Ranch...

Summer may be over, but there’s still work to be done in the garden! If you take a look around, you might see some neighbors actually taking advantage of that oh-so-subtle second growing season that we in Austin are so fortunate to have. September 11th is the estimated planting date for cool season vegetables. If you missed the date, reserve the date on your calendar next year and be prepared. For now, plant yourself some nasturtiums, ornamental sweet peas, and mixed lettuces from seed. It’s not too late to get something going, but remember to protect your seedlings, for the rabbits are out in fierce numbers and will come to check out your salad bar.

There’s plenty to do on the maintenance side as well. Buy yourself a bottle of rooting hormone. Take a look around at some of the plants that didn’t do too well over the course of this summer and do them a favor. Follow the instructions on the bottle for diluting the hormone in water and apply it to your scraggly plants and bushes. Strengthening your plants’ root systems will give you wonderful blooms and foliage during the next growing season. Take the time to apply rooting hormone at least two and maybe three times over the winter.

Visit your local garden center or nursery. My favorite is Barton Springs Nursery on Bee Caves Rd. here in Austin. This is the time of year when nurseries put out their fall-blooming plants and shrubs. It’s an excellent time to diversify your garden and make sure that you have a smattering of fall-bloomers in your yard next year. And if you do plant anything this fall, don’t forget to give it plenty of water and rooting hormone. You’ll want to give it a good chance to survive when next summer’s heat sets in yet again.

This morning while brushing my 6 year old daughters hair, I explained to her what happened 8 years ago. 9-11... she was curious and asked questions like "were you there", "how many people died", "was I born then"? I used the word terrorists throughout my explanation of events and she never asked me who they were. She did ask me why and I paused for a moment...

Why?

Because a group of people hates Americans, our freedom and what we stand for as a Nation so much that they want to kill us.

Extremely scary...

And then, I listened to the bag pipes and taps at Ground Zero and felt tears well up in my eyes.

It reminded me of I Corinthians 13... we need to love one another!

I will never forget!

New eyes are better than four eyes!

I have an adorable listing. It's gotten rave reviews on property tours. Open House comments are highly positive. Agent feedback has been full of praise. But it is still active! The price point was good, but we reduced the price to make a bigger impression. Central Texas is in a drought, yet my client is hand-watering (which is the only legal way) to keep the yard looking semi green. Designer paint, professionally landscaped backyard... we have been scratching our heads on this thinking "what is wrong...".

Called my favorite Home Stager and we had a one hour appointment today with the Owner. New eyes are better than four eyes! In 60 minutes she transformed what we thought was beautiful into something incredible. Bedrooms look twice as big, windows filtering more light inwards, counter tops seem endless. I was shocked and impressed at the same time. What a difference.

An open house next weekend and the property tour again. I'll let you know what the new feedback is... and when we get a contract! But above all, having the Stager really opened up my eyes. My Client was absorbing all she heard and was quick to respond when the Stager said "Let's move this now..." And as a Realtor, it's an excellent idea to have someone else make the strong suggestions while I stay neutral. However, my Stager was quick to refer back to me when the Client didn't answer in a fast enough fashion.

I'm incredibly impressed... more to come....

Forecast from Mark Dotzour, Chief Economist from the Texas Real Estate Center

A Texas-based economist says he expects interest rates to stay near zero easily through the end of this year. What does his forecast mean for banks and those who borrow money? When the Fed said it will keep its benchmark short-term interest rate at virtually zero for some time, it signaled a plan for the banking industry. Mark Dotzour, chief economist for the Real Estate Center at Texas A & M, said the Fed’s move to keep rates unchanged was no surprise. Here’s his take on what this means for banks: “The federal government appears to have decided to postpone the recognition of the losses that banks have incurred,” Dotzour said. “It appears that we are now going to amortize those losses over a period of years, and keep interest rates low to allow banks to earn their way out of the losses they have incurred. I would expect rates to stay near zero easily through the end of this year.”

Dotzour also has some observations on the state of the housing market in Texas. But first, a bit of perspective. Two years ago, Dotzour said new home construction needed to fall dramatically to avoid the level of overbuilding that could damage Texas housing markets. He even picked summer 2009 as the bottom of the housing cycle. His reasoning was that banks would constrain credit to home builders and developers.

Looks like he hit the nail on the head. The Texas inventory of new and existing homes is in good shape. “It appears we are at the bottom of the housing market in most Texas cities,” he said. And this prompted him to say further: “I feel now is the time to buy a house in most Texas cities. Housing affordability has never been higher and I never thought I would see 5% mortgages in my lifetime. If you plan to live in a house for at least two or three years, now is the time to buy.” “If you are planning to build a home to retire to in the near future, now is a great time to do it. Contractors are plentiful, construction costs are lower and mortgage money is cheap,” he continued.

What will be the warning signs if this situation is poised to change? He said mortgage rates should remain low as long as the federal government continues to purchase almost all residential mortgages. “When they stop, rates will move up,” he predicted. The Bionic Man!

My husband finally did it - had total knee replacement surgery on his right knee after years of pain preceded by years of all out sports. He was the All American High School Guy, 6'2" handsome who played aggressively on the field or court. The stories he tells about his concussions or stitches during games are amazing and scary. Later in life, that zest for action continued onto the Adult Basketball league and really, has been the essence of his life. No matter what he does, he jumps in full force and to the best of his ability, until completion. That is one of the endearing traits that drew me to him.

But now, it's a slightly different story, and the go get em guy is in a serious amount of pain. His incision, about 12" long, stapled shut and puckered, is now steri-stripped and looking much better. His degree of knee flexibly improves daily as does his extension and I can see his strength increase.

Before his surgery, he was pretending to moon walk throughout the house, teasing at how much better he'd be once he had his new knee. There has been no moon walking yet, but I see the Steve Austin twinkle in his eyes and know it's just a matter of time.

We can rebuild him...

First impressions and curb appeal.

It has been scientifically proven you have 7 seconds to make a first impression on someone. In Real Estate that first impression is the curb appeal of your home. What do you want that first impression to be? Easily you could say I want my home to look welcoming and inviting. How do you translate that into curb appeal? How do you manifest the outside of your home into looking so lovely that a potential buyer will be drawn to the inside?

Let's start with the facts; what would your Inspector say? He would suggest all foliage trimmed away from the home and that tree limbs should be at least 3 feet from any roof line. He would advise eliminating all debris from flower beds and removing wood piles that could harbor termites or carpenter ants.

Aesthetically speaking, we know a well manicured yard speaks volumes and if it's that well kept on the outside, then more than likely its well kept on the inside. Keeping your lawn mowed, edged and watered with frequent weeding and mulched flower beds are very important. Add new sod if there are bare spots or fill in with peat moss and seed. Make sure there are no toys or sports equipment lying around the yard as well.

Foliage is the next step in creating that fantastic curb appeal. It has been proven that color produces a psychological effect in people and evokes an emotional response. Green means prosperity so plant shrubs and ornamental grasses. Warm colors means strength and yellow grabs the eye and increases energy and vitality. The color of the exterior of your home should be considered when picking out flowers as you want the landscaping to flow around the home. If you have existing plants, try adding a few pots with different flowers in them. Personally I like using one type and color of pot for uniformity then expressing myself with flower colors.

Finally, wash the widows and door down, remove screens for brighter windows, and power wash the sidewalk and driveway. Now you have just completed step one of getting your house market ready and you are well on your way to selling your home!

The Respect Factor

We see it all the time... a lack of respect. It can be as simple as cutting in a long line or as egregious as trashing someone's property. From snide teenage comments to adult road rage - it's all around us.

A local Realtor posted this comment the other day:

When you profess to have "no hate" look closely at what you believe in and be careful you don't harbor critical judgments and beliefs that allow for hate.

I believe that it's those critical judgments that begin with lack of respect.

I could describe scenario after scenario that shows lack of respect but instead want to stress the need to get back to the basics. It starts at home with providing our children the education of respect. Holding them accountable for their messes and the subsequent clean up by them is paramount in learning respect. Showing consideration for parents and grandparents is another form of respect that is almost extinct in today's kids. Again, getting back to the basics. As a child or teen, I would have never back talked to my parents and yet - to my dismay - every once in awhile I hear something like that from my own children. How did that happen???

I need to not only get back to basics, but reiterate them so we don't forget... daily, weekly, monthly - depends on the circumstances.

I have this strong desire to have a long talk with my children, especially as we travel to Oklahoma this weekend for my Grandmother's 90th birthday party... now that was a respectful period of time!!!

My Father...

My Father is Lieutenant General Dale W. Thompson, Jr., retired from a distinguished Air Force career in 1995. Being Father's Day today, I felt compelled to write a few words down about the Air Force Father. He is such a different kind of Dad, because a career in the Air Force means more than just a 40 hour work week with the weekends off. There were numerous times my Dad was TDY, flying his jet here and there and everywhere, or wherever the Air Force dictated. But I've stumbled on some stories that show my Father in a different light.

The above picture shows my Dad's wing man, my Grandmother and my Dad when he was stationed at the Air Force Academy. In his hands is my first dog, Tai Tai, a Lhasa Apso puppy that came from a litter my Grandmother had. I'm not even certain the jet, perhaps a T-38, but he flew to Omaha, picked up that tiny puppy, put her in his flight suit pocket then flew back to Colorado (obviously at a low altitude). How many Dad's would go Cross Country for a puppy?

During Vietnam, it was common for spouses of the deployed to PCS where they wanted. What a novel idea and it's a shame that that is no longer in practice today because being near family when your husband is flying combat missions is essential. In 1969/1970, we moved to Hawaii as my Father volunteered for his third tour to Vietnam flying FAC with the Australian Air Force. At that time in my life, I didn't know what was going on but I do remember my Father's R&R. My brother and I were surprised at my Aunt Marilyn's house; one second we were playing, the other we were racing into his arms! The next day we had a picnic on Waikiki Beach with black sand between our toes. I have to find those pictures because the smiles on our faces show how delighted we were in our Dad being home.

Though the time can be short with miles in between, simple things such as a picnic on the beach can burn into the mind of a child and offer the sweetest memories of a special Dad. Happy Father's Day Dad... I love you very much!

It's all about the Customer Service

Every person can think back to a situation where they had really bad customer service. I've experienced it recently and it angers me to my core because I believe good Customer Service should be the cornerstone of every business. It's a deciding factor whether a patron will return for additional services or recommend the service to friends and family.

We are humans and are full of faults, but having a bad day or attitude is not an excuse for poor Customer Service. It's easy to take a deep breath and answer the phone in a pleasant and upbeat tone. It's easy to compose a thoughtful email without permeating it with negative personal vibes. It's easy to change a scowl and furrowed brow to a smile to greet a customer.

Our economy has created many personal stresses that easily flow into the work place, but this is the exact time for greater levels Customer Service. You want to keep the customers you have and you want to build your customer base! Even in a down turned market, customer service should still be #1.

Don't forget - return those phone calls and emails, even if it's just to say "I got your note and will respond in depth later today." Constant contact per the customers request is equally important, even via a hand written note. Set your out of office replies when away to keep the patron in the know! Put that client FIRST!

We should all strive for excellent Customer Service! And we should never settle for anything less!

Austin's Energy Conservation Audit and Disclosure Ordinance

Mayor Will Wynn and the Austin City Council created the ECAD ordinance or Energy Conservation Audit and Disclosure Ordinance to "improve the energy efficiency of Austin homes and buildings that receive electricity from Austin Energy". Additionally, it states that "the ordinance helps meet one of the goals of the Austin Climate Protection Plan - offsetting 700 megawatts of peak energy demand by 2020 and to reduce Austin's carbon footprint".

This goes into affect on 1 June 2009. As a Realtor, if you have a listing - active or pending - and that home is serviced by Austin Energy, you will need an audit from an approved Auditor.

As a homeowner contemplating listing your home - how do you know if your home fits the audit criteria? Here is the Exemption List taken from Austin Energy to determine whether or not you will need one.

How much will an energy audit cost you if you meet the requirements? I called a few auditors off Austin Energy's list and the range is between $200 - $300. Specifications includes square footage as well as number of AC units. The auditor will perform a Duct Blast Test which detects duct leakage. There are other steps involved, but the auditor will give you an estimate prior to arriving on your front door.

How can you be proactive? Examine your attic and look at the duct work. If you see any tears, then fix or replace them. Insulation needs to be uniform as well, so think about topping yours up if it looks uneven and burrowed or add new R-38. Solar screens are a huge way to be more energy efficient and it's fairly easy to do your own screens and make them solar. You can purchase the solar screen material at Home Depot or Lowe's as well as the tool used to stretch the fabric. I did it... and if I can do it, you can too!

Above all, don't be nervous or scared about these audits. The information and report must be disclosed, but fixing them is not a mandatory task. However, when it comes time to negotiate a contract, the information on the audit could be brought into play! Be prepared!

To state, in all seriousness, that Conservatives protesting on April 15th Tea Parties "have no idea what the Boston Tea Party was about. They don't know their history at all. It's about hating a black man in the White House" is the most ludicrous thing I have heard to date, even over any tirade from Alec Baldwin. Her statement can be compared to saying its 70 degrees in America.

It's obvious that as her acting career diminishes even more, she needs something to shine the light upon her head and spewing untruths on MSNBC without any sort of argument from the commentator is her way up!

I have an interesting observation to share... at my gym, Wild Basin, there is a flat screen every 4 feet. Since I work out in the mornings, I get to view most of the morning news programs. For the past two weeks, I've been focusing in on the reporters and have made a big discovery. Their foreheads don't move!

Today, I had HLN (Headline News), Fox News and ABC basically in a row. I won't name names, but it's amazing to see the main morning anchors faces totally devoid of expression. It's natural for our faces to move when we speak and the brow will raise and the forehead will crease when a point is made. One anchor can only move her mouth! It's more visible in female anchors though you can pick out a few male anchors with "expressionlessness" from the eyes up.

But wait, I turned to see Dick Vitale and that man is full of expression! What is causing these Anchors to misplace their facial expressions? Can you spell b-o-t-o-x? Seriously, do you think the American Public cares about a few wrinkles on the forehead? Give us the emotion! Report to us with feeling, with passion - that's what we want to see.

Cell Phone Recycle Collection Program

As the Chairman for the Community Services Group of the Williamson County Association of Realtors, one of our projects is collecting used cell phones to raise money for Hope Alliance, which is the Williamson County Domestic Violence Shelter. I know we all have old phones either at work or in a kitchen drawer that we don't know what to do with. I will take them off your hands, whether in working order or NOT! I don't need the box, documentation or charger, but will take the batteries. The collected phones are sent to a National Organization who either reprogram them for 9-1-1 use only or do a complete recycle and send money back to the Shelter.

There reaches a point where many of us finally throw up our hands and shout "enough" as the doom and gloom of the news pours through our TV. We waited for the Inauguration to spark the market back up, we are waiting for the Stimulus Package to pass through the Senate, we are waiting to hear how the companies spent the first round of Stimulus Money and yet, are we better off?

This has nothing to do with the current President or who you voted for - but has everything to do with GREED. Pure and simple. I'm fed up! I'm fed up with the mountainous amount of money going to bail out Corporate America while the American Citizen suffers.

I think the Government should take the TRILLIONS of dollars and give it back to its people. Give every American over 18 $50,000. Talk about injecting it back into the economy! What would YOU do with $50,000? Pay off your credit cards (which gives money to Corporate America), pay down your Mortgage (which gives money to Corporate America), pay off your auto loan (which gives money to Corporate America), buy something (which gives money to Corporate America) or would you put it into a Saving Account (which gives money to Corporate America)...

By giving the Bailout Money to the people, there certainly won't be big Corporate Bonuses to already over paid CEO's. There won't be anymore Personal Grooming Parties like AIG had, no new Corporate Jets to purchase...

Friday Nights...

One daughter breezes through the front door contemplating the "plans" for the night while another hopefully is looking tough as all-get-out as a defender on her soccer team (make those girls quake in their cleats) while my 5 year old tries a high C note on her echo microphone. Seriously, Emma is singing as loud as the mic will allow (I can hear it and I'm downstairs, across the house - it's LOUD). Okay, I did teach her that though (and I'm not a singer - so you have an idea of how it sounds).

We've been nibbling for dinner (which I love) on things like cauliflower, grilled shrimp left-overs, sliced apples and those great Stacy's Naked Pita Chips (certainly not named after me).

Trey's been asleep since 6:30 (seriously) but is awake now, watching Friday Night Lights... his big toe just attacked Emma as she breezed by trying to show me a magic trick. She stuffs her rain boots with toys that get stuck in the toe. Then she can tip it upside down, nothing comes out, and she will mysteriously pull something out (like a top hat and a rabbit -- a rain boot and unicorn). At least she's put the echo mic down...

I have to get a video of that to share!

You CAN buy a house in 2009!

It's obvious that things have changed in the past year. Most news article portray a very bleak outlook for those wishing to buy a home. Perhaps you have to sell an existing home first or are applying for your first mortgage; either task can seem daunting! But let me assure you, it can be done - especially in Austin and the surrounding area.

If you plan to sell your existing home, it's a good idea to know the market around you. A Realtor can create a personalized Comparative Market Analysis of your neighborhood so you can see what is for sale in your subdivision, what has SOLD recently and how long it was on the market before it closed. Those factors indicate what you can do in terms of listing price and that, by far, is where you want to be "smack on". Get it priced RIGHT the first time!

If you plan to apply for a mortgage, you need to know that the standards have tightened up, but don't let that stop you! One of the most significant changes is the drop in 100% financing. Many Lenders have gone back to the basic conventional 80/20. If you plan to use FHA, the loan limit has been increased which gives you more buying power. And don't forget about the Home Buyer Tax Credit program.

An experienced Realtor will be able to recommend a Lender or two and I always tell my clients to "shop around" as ultimately, it is your business and your money. You need to be very comfortable with the Lender you choose as it's a long term commitment and relationship. And don't forget, interests rates are around 5%!

Waiting for the economy to re-bound doesn't mean you have to give up your dreams of Homeownership or moving up to the home of your dreams.

Now this is organized!!!

Have you seen Martha Stewart's closets? Seriously, I have never viewed anything so organized in my life. I was amazed and daunted too, in that my closets have never looked anywhere close to that. Then I found motivation....

Guess what - it's not too difficult to make a closet look neat and in order. First, I pulled everything out and sorted through the things I wanted to keep and the things that needed to be pitched. That cleared nearly half of the original contents! I then wiped the shelves down and started to sort the linens. I grouped them, folded, by color and in 30 minutes, had it completely organized. Seriously, it was that easy.

My point today is to head over to Martha's site, look at her level of closet organization, then tackle it on your own. It's an easy process and once complete, makes you feel really good.

No matter the walk you find yourself currently on, the economy touches each one of us in a negative fashion. Now is the time to inventory what you have, with the understanding that things have to last longer. It's time to jettison the junk out of our lives and keep that which we need, but in an organized fashion. The upcoming New Year seems to be the catalyst for all to offer organizational tips. Martha Stewart is organizing her closets and doubling its space, The Container Store has their Elfa products on sale, and Target is showcasing its Christmas containers.

If you have unimaginable amounts of money, then this post is not for you. But if you are like every other middle American, then your possessions are of great value in that most people don't have the extra disposable income to go and buy what they want. Our clothes need to last longer as do our cars, our shoes, and our kitchenware. Organization plays a huge roll here as it's good to know what you have and it's good to store it properly so it lasts longer.

In my closet I have gone through my entire inventory and seriously pulled things I don't wear anymore and donated those items to Goodwill. Then I checked all the buttons as nothing is worse than grabbing something to put on, that matches your outfit to a tee, then realizing the buttons fell off and you can't wear it. I wrapped all my sweaters up and placed them in bags that I've recycled from when I bought sheets for the girls this past October. My blazers have those handy clear shoulder covers on them to keep the dust off so they are wear-ready. It's nice to be able to see everything I have, know it's clean and in good repair.

In organizing, don't think you have to give up a day to complete this task. 30 minutes here and 30 minutes there will lead you to completion as well. Do specific sections of a closet, like work clothes, so the process doesn't scare you. Above all, be honest with what you wear and what you keep and take care of it so it lasts longer.

Today was a glorious day in Church with the Bells, the Choir, the Contemporary Band, Communion and a wonderful sermon by our Pastor. His message was "Do not be afraid for unto us a Child is born, a Saviour". He said that the phrase "do not be afraid" is used over and over again in the Bible and it's because God loves us so much that he gave up His Son. We have a Saviour!!! We are saved!

His point was at this time in the world where every daily headline is negative, scary and uncertain, there is a bright light - the celebration of Christmas - with it's message and meaning that we have a Saviour, so do not be frightened, do not be afraid. Whatever "worldly" uncertainties we face should not create stress or anxiety in us.

The phrase "a Saviour is born" has such great meaning!

I'm done decorating our home and will be heading up to the school to help out with the Kindergarten Holiday Party this afternoon. Emma and I thought it would be fun to make something cute to give out as gifts to all her classmates. We came up with a Candy cane Reindeer. I love the wiggly eyes and big red nose - it seems to give each one it's own, distinct personality. Emma loved eating the left overs and is excited to hand them out to each child. Seeing her little face light up at the sight of a mountain of Candy canes blessed my heart more than she will ever know.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery said that All grown-ups were once children (but few of them remember it). And I find that quote so true. During the Holidays, I reflect back to my childhood days at Christmas and find my memories are far and few between. I cannot tell you what I got for Christmas each year except for the Christmas when I was six, as Santa brought me an Easy Bake Oven and many mixes and frosting. I could not wait for my Dad to put in the light bulb so I could start my culinary training. I made my family individual cakes, the neighbors little brownies with colorful sprinkles and I think I even made something for our dog. When I ran out of cake mixes, I would sneak into the kitchen and "borrow" some of Mom's pantry stuff and make my own. Those didn't turn out as well as the mixes, however.

It's not about the stuff you get, it's not about all the stuff you give, but about pulling the family together. Knowing all our kids will be home under one roof on Christmas Eve is top of my list next to the Monkey Bread I'll make Christmas morning that will fill the house with the smell of cinnamon. I cant wait for the sound of laughter echoing room to room. Throw some Christmas lights on and I'm set!

Rookie of the Year

Last night was the Williamson County Association of Realtors Installation and Awards Banquet. I was presented Rookie of the Year 2008. It was just an honor to be one of the nominations. I gave a little speech in between choking up but didn't thank the Association on a whole. WCAOR has a level of professionalism bar none. I have never met so many friendly people and I find that no matter who I turn to, everyone is willing to lend a hand or add some needed advise. The group that works at the WCAOR is absolutely wonderful and I feel at home there.

I have been asked to Chair the Community Services Committee once again for 2009 and am looking for volunteers to join me. Right now, there are so many more people in need and even giving a roll of toilet paper will make a difference somewhere. We need to step up to the challenge and give back MORE than ever.

Having the support of loving family and friends has given me determination in the Real Estate field and I know that will continue.

Thanksgiving Weekend

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend including the Feast on Thursday and the D'Feeter's Soccer Tournament that Trey's Daughter, Haley, was in. Attended by College Scouts, the teams played girls from other states and were able to "showcase" their abilities and talents. Our last game was against a team from Tulsa and guess who was there... Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. Garth's Daughter was the back-up Goalie. On a PK, Haley scored a goal and her team won. Then she scooped up Emma and we got a great picture...

Timing

Timing is such an interesting and tricky factor and we have all heard the saying "it's all about timing" or "timing is everything" and I have to ask myself is timing God driven because He knows better, or something we choose. If we choose, is it God offering up several different roads we can travel?

I tend to believe the road we are on is God driven, though we go about our activities with choices. Sometimes those choices are not what we want at the time and it's difficult to sift through the hows and whys things don't work out the way we have dreamt them to.

Apathy vs. Empathetic Concern

Apathy is taking over our society, our cultures, our world. Where does this state of indifference come from and how did living without concern, motivation or passion overtake our empathetic concern? Where is the desire to connect to others? I see it all around me, in different situations and involving many different people, yet in every circumstance, I am appalled.

I am not naive, and do not consider myself sheltered. I grew up living in Europe most of my life, traveled internationally by myself by the age of 12, and on the contrary, consider myself open and knowledgeable. Being astonished by the apathetic nature of our society is not a lack of intelligence.

Apathy seems to touch every walk of life. I see it in many husband/wife relationships where there is no motivation to connect either verbally or non verbally. Gone is the gentle morning touch that signifies adoration and thankfulness to wake up with the one you love. I see it in the parent/child relationship where the TV/Wii or XBox is the bond rather than simply "let's sit down a read together".

In the workplace it is rampant! Apathy takes the shape of an absence of concern for the fellow co-worker. I've even seen it get to a level of loathing someone just because. How sad is that? Why would anyone ever wish ill-will to someone in that manner? How can it possibly be healthy to be apathetic? I see it leading to depression and misery, which can manifest itself into physical health issues.

It's time to say no to apathy! We need to take back the care and concern for others and own it! We need to make it a part of our daily lives, embrace it and start at home. For goodness sakes, show your spouse you love them!!! Touch them! Hold them! Kiss them! Do the same for your children!

Relax as you drive and be courteous to the person trying to merge onto the highway. Allow pedestrians to cross even if you have the right of way. Hold the door open for others. I could go on and on with these acts of kindness that are easy to do but mean so much.

Life on this earth is too short to be apathetic.

Treasure

Thornton Wilder believed "We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures."

What a wonderful quote to keep centered in our mind as we go about our day, our week, our month, and our lives. We are ALIVE, every minute, and this is a testament that our hearts need to be conscious of and treasure what we have.

Personally, God is the forefront of my focus. Then my amazing family and friends. I'm also significantly aware that I'm blessed to be working in Real Estate at this point in time and am thankful for every client. It drives me to be a better Realtor, in that each person and transaction is a treasure as well.

When you look at those things as treasures, you certainly don't take them for granted. And treasures should never be mistaken for material possessions, because they can't enrich our heart like the sound of laughter from a happy family can.

Be alive and hold tight to your treasures!
